Emergency Evacuation Procedures for Students with Disabilities
You may have a student with a disability in your class for the semester who may require assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation of the building.
The student has responsibility for their own safety and has been encouraged to formulate an emergency evacuation plan for their classroom locations. As part of this plan, the student has been asked to communicate with each of his/her professors concerning evacuation procedures. However, the faculty member also has certain responsibilities with respect to ensuring that a student in class is safely and properly evacuated in the event of an emergency. You are asked to do the following:
- Read the Emergency Action Plan that can be found on the campus police department's website at www.iusb.edu/~iupdsb. Any questions about these procedures should be directed to the IU South Bend campus police department at 574-520-4499 (8am-5pm M-F). You can also contact the Office of Accessible Educational Services at 574-520-4256.
- Familiarize yourself with the emergency evacuation route for your particular classroom, including the location of the first searched evacuation area, if appropriate. You should also know the location of the tornado safe area closest to your classroom. This information can be found on the evacuation maps located in the hallways.
- Meet with the student to discuss the emergency evacuation procedures. You should also identify someone who is able to be an escort for the student in the event of an emergency evacuation. The student may have already identified someone to serve this function. If the student does not have a person for this, you will need to solicit the assistance of someone in the class.
Please note that emergency personnel respond to evacuation locations only when there is an actual emergency and the building must be evacuated. They do not do so for system tests and other non-emergency situations.
