Students should complete this at least 2-3 days prior to attending New Student Orientation or meeting with an advisor to register for classes. There is no cost for the placement and it can be taken any time at any computer.

Academic Integrity

The purpose of the placement is to give an accurate measure of your current math skills so you will have a better opportunity to be successful in your courses. There is no benefit to inflating your abilities on the placement. While you are taking the placement, do not consult with any other source for help (friends, family, web searches, textbooks, etc), and do your honest best. Use of outside resources may result in you being placed into a course you are not prepared for.

How Much Time is Allotted for the Placement?

Once you log on, you have 3 hours to complete the exam. Please ensure you have a distraction free space, conducive to doing your best work.

Can I Retake the Placement?

Yes. You have access to the placement for a year and can take it up to 5 times. Prior to the second attempt, students must wait 48 hours and are required to study the learning modules for a minimum of four hours. For the third attempt and beyond, it must be completed at the Testing Center on campus. Email tpciusb@iusb.edu for information.

Tip: a score of 0-30 may require a pre-college math class. After the initial attempt, students that study the learning modules in ALEKS usually improve scores on their second attempt.

The Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE) offers FREE services to help you refresh your math skills in preparation for the ALEKS math course placement or simply to be BETTER PREPARED for your first college math class.

 Interpreting your ALEKS Math Course Placement
The first math course you take will vary, depending on your major. You advisor will help you select the appropriate math course. In most cases a score of 31-36 is needed in order to take a college-level math course, Thus, if your score is below 31, we strongly advise working through the learning modules that ALEKS provides and taking the course placement again.

Where to Find Your Math Course Placement Results
1. Go to One.IU.
2. In the search bar, type “Student Center.”
3. Open up Student Center.
4. On the left, under “Academics,” click on the link for “Test Scores.”
5. On the right, your score will appear under PLTSB – South Bend Placement Tests.
6. Your score will be displayed next to ALEKS Math Placement Test with a score range of 0 – 100.
