Emergency Procedures for an Inclusive Campus (EPIC)
- Notify Disability Support Services of needed accommodations. Consider filing an Emergency Self-ID Form with DSS.
- Know closest exits. Familiarize yourself with the emergency evacuation route for each of your classrooms. Determine a primary route and, if possible, a secondary route.
- Make sure you also know the location and route to the designated severe weather sheltering area. Maps of emergency evacuation routes are displayed in hallways.
- If you are unable to evacuate, find a safe location in the building and shelter-in-place.
- Always call 911 with your location (building, address, room number). If you have a cell phone, keep it with you whenever you can.
- Guidance for evacuating and sheltering-in-place is included in the Evacuation & Shelter-in-Place section of the Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAPs):
- If you are in need of a BEAP in an accessible format, please contact a member of the Public Safety and Institutional Assurance team at: iuemc@iu.edu.
- Speak with your professors about evacuation needs and plan. You are the best authority as to how you need to be assisted.
- For assistance in preparing your personal plan, please contact the Disability Support Services office, (574) 520-4460, who will assist in coordinating a plan with your instructor and the Emergency Management and Continuity (EMC) office.
- Don’t use elevators (unless instructed to by emergency personnel).
- If you can’t evacuate the building call IUPD or 911.
- Remain calm.
- Always ask someone requiring additional assistance how you can help before attempting to provide assistance. If you offer assistance, wait until the offer is accepted.
- Only attempt an emergency evacuation if you have had emergency assistance training or if the person is in immediate danger and cannot wait for emergency personnel.
- If you know of someone you weren’t able to assist, notify emergency personnel or call 911 immediately.
