Learn More About Us and What to Expect

The Student Counseling Center is available to IU South Bend students via in-person or remote Zoom Health telecounseling services and support. We are here to help. Our services are confidential and HIPAA compliant.

Whether you are an established client, or new to the counseling process, please follow these few steps to ensure that we are able to connect with you.

1. To get started, please stop by the Student Counseling Center located in the Administration Building, Suite 175 for a brief individual consultation and screening during office hours, or call the Student Counseling Center at 574-520-4125 to speak with a counselor and proceed with a brief phone screening. Or you may leave a confidential voice mail and leave your name and contact information. It may take up to 48 hours (business-day) for a counselor to get back with you. *If you are experiencing a mental health emergency and need immediate crisis intervention, please call 911 or Memorial Epworth, at 574-647-8400.

2. You will be assigned a counselor depending on your times of availability, and your counselor will call you to schedule an in-person or remote Zoom Health telecounseling session. *If you have chosen Zoom telehealth counseling, the counselor will provide you, via email, with information on informed consent, rights and responsibilities, and also discuss how to be prepared to participate in the Zoom Health telecounseling process. Your confidentiality and privacy are of the utmost importance to us.

3. As always, there is no fee for our services. You simply need to be currently enrolled as an IU South Bend student, or IU Medical School South Bend Campus student.

The staff at the Student Counseling Center care about your well-being. Please be safe, and as always, remember that it is OK to ask for help!

About the Student Counseling Center

Staffing: Counseling services and other programs at the Student Counseling Center are offered and overseen by Clinical Mental Health Counselors, licensed in the state of Indiana. The SCC also employs pre-licensed counselors who have significant experience working with college student populations. Advanced graduate student interns in mental health counseling and social work provide counseling as well; all SCC services are provided under the supervision of licensed clinical professionals.

Getting started: Successful counseling involves building a relationship of trust and respect between the client and counselor. An intake evaluation, or process of learning about you and your background and culture, will be conducted as part of the first session. You and your counselor will then work collaboratively to set goals and chart a course of counseling that offers realistic and meaningful solutions.

Counseling sessions: Counseling is offered on a short-term, individualized, basis. Counseling sessions last between 40 and 45 minutes and are typically scheduled once a week or every two weeks. Please note, due to the small number of staff and limited resources of the Counseling Center, students with more long term needs requiring special treatment may be referred out to community providers shortly after the initial evaluation.

Confidentiality: Information provided by students to the Student Counseling Center is private and confidential; visiting the SCC does not become part of the student's academic record. Staff members will not share any information about counseling with other university departments, with family members, or with community professionals unless we have the client's written consent to do so. Except in emergency situations (such as imminent danger to self or others, or allegations of child abuse), we do not share student records with anyone.
