GPA Calculation
Only courses with letter grades of A+ through F are used in calculating the grade point average (GPA). Passing (P) and Satisfactory (S) grades are passing grades in completed courses but are not used in calculating the GPA. Courses taken at non-IU institutions are not used in calculating the IU GPA.
IU South Bend students pursuing Purdue University (PU) degrees offered through the PU School of Technology at IU South Bend will have their GPAs calculated following the PU grading policy. Courses taken at any IU or PU campus and included in the student’s program of study will be used in calculating the final GPA. This degree GPA will only appear on the IU transcript upon degree completion.
The grade point average is reported in two ways:
- The semester GPA is the calculation of all grades received in a single semester.
- The cumulative GPA is the calculation of all grades received while an undergraduate or a graduate student at the university.
If a student is enrolled at more than one IU campus during the academic career, the cumulative GPA will reflect the student’s IU GPA (not separated by campus). However, separate GPAs are calculated for undergraduate work and for graduate work. If a student pursued both an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree at IU, the GPAs will be calculated separately and both will appear on the official transcript.
To calculate your GPA, take the number of points for each grade and multiply it by the number of credits. For example, a 3 credit grade of A equals 12 GPA points. Add all GPA points together and divide by the total number of GPA credit hours completed.
Example
3 credits A 3 x 4.0 = 12.0 points
3 credits B- 3 x 2.7 = 8.1 points
2 credits C 2 x 2.0 = 4.0 points
2 credits F 2 x 0.0 = 0.0 points
2 credits S not used in calculation
3 credits I not used in calculation
3 credits W not used in calculation
Totals:
10 credits = 24.1 points
24.1 divided by 10 credits = 2.41 GPA
In some cases, schools calculate a degree GPA that may vary slightly from the cumulative GPA, as it appears in the summary portion of the transcript. This is due to differences in program requirements and is used most often in programs where students earn PU degrees. Check with your school recorder for more information.
Hours Passed is the number of IU course hours completed with a passing grade (A+ through D-, S, or P) at the level indicated (undergraduate, graduate, or cumulative). Any hours earned as a transfer student outside the IU system are recorded on the transcript as Transfer Hours. IU hours passed and transfer hours are added together to determine a student’s class standing.
