Degree Seeking Students
Only courses that will apply to the degree a student is seeking are eligible to receive financial aid.
Non-Degree Students
Students who are coded non-degree, either undergraduate or graduate, are ineligible for financial aid.
Teacher’s Certificate
Students who are in a teacher’s certification program, and who are approved for financial assistance, are awarded aid at the undergraduate level.
To qualify, the coursework must be required for initial elementary or secondary teacher certification, or the re-certification.
Students who are in a teacher’s certification program must follow all the satisfactory academic progress requirements for all undergraduates.
Preparatory Course Work Required for Admission to an IU South Bend Graduate Program
Students must provide written affirmation from an academic advisor that the student will be admitted to an IU South Bend graduate program upon successful completion of prerequisite classes.
Students approved for preparatory course work may receive federal Stafford Loans at the fifth-year undergraduate federal loan limit for a maximum of 12 consecutive months.
Students who are in preparatory course work classes must follow all the satisfactory academic progress requirements based on enrollment status.
Repeated Coursework
The following also applies to all State Grant awards.
Per federal regulations, repeated coursework that falls under the following conditions cannot be included in a student's enrollment status for Title IV Federal Aid eligibility, including the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Stafford Loans:
- Repeating a previously passed course more than once. A course is considered passed if the student receives a grade of D- or better.
- Repeating a previously passed course due to failing other coursework.
Details
- Repeated enrollment that is not aid eligible will be excluded from the student's enrollment status for the term.
- Federal Title IV aid will be recalculated based on the student's adjusted enrollment status.
- This recalculation will be applied regardless of whether a student received aid for previous course enrollments.
- Some courses are repeatable per university policy and are not restricted by these regulations. Students will be notified if they are receiving Title IV aid and enrolled in non-repeatable coursework for a term.
- Waitlisted courses do not count toward official enrollment status for financial aid purposes.
Example: A student is taking a previously passed three credit hour course for the third time. The student is enrolled in a total of twelve credit hours for the term. Per federal regulations, the repeated course must be excluded from the student's Title IV enrollment status. Only nine of the student's twelve hours can be used to calculate his Title IV aid eligibility. The student's Federal Pell Grant will be reduced to reflect three quarter time instead of full-time enrollment.
