Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, River Crossing Campus Housing will be open for the fall. Our apartment style residence halls create a unique advantage for our students by providing each student with their own private bedroom. Students may need to share a bathroom with one other apartment mate and will share a kitchen and a living room with all apartment mates.
There is always a risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus, and certain environments and behaviors will increase that risk. Those who reside in concentrated living areas (apartments, multi-family homes, homes in close proximity to one another, etc.) have an increased likelihood of infection. Our residence halls are apartment style where each resident has their own private bedroom. Students may need to share a bathroom with one other apartment mate and will share a kitchen and a living room with all apartment mates. This living arrangement creates a very small group who will live in close proximity and share space which helps limit the risk of infection. Each apartment has its own HVAC system, which does not connect to other apartments. This also reduces the risk of spread.
The greatest threat however is personal behavior and engaging in activities that increase the risk. To that end, we have made changes to our policies to help promote the health and safety of our community. A major change is that non-housing guests, including overnight guests, will not be permitted into residential buildings. Instead, residents will be able to reserve space to meet with non-housing students in the Community Building. Additionally, almost all of our services may be provided virtually, foot traffic will be reduced in common areas, and the campus has created a COVID-19-sepcific cleaning plan for public spaces. Residents will also have to follow the requirements of the Student Commitment Form, including wearing a mask when outside of their apartments.
The most effective way, however, to reduce the risk will be for the residents themselves to make choices that limit their exposure. We recommend that residents refrain from visiting with many people in close proximity such as bars, restaurants, and other similar large group activities. We encourage residents to regularly clean their apartments, especially shared spaces such as bathrooms and kitchens.
While our apartment style residences do not require increased de-densification, we will be taking rooms offline to use for isolation. We will try to honor apartment mate requests to the best of our ability.
Yes. You will be required to take and provide the University with the results of a COVID-19 test administered no more than ten (10) days before your scheduled move in date. If your test result is positive, you will, at a minimum, not be permitted to move in for fourteen (14) days after the date of the test and you must self-isolate during that fourteen (14) day period. If you have already been diagnosed with COVID-19, you must still take and provide the University with the test results. More information will be sent directly to residents about this process.

* Housing residents wanting to remain in housing during intersession 1, winter break, and intercession 2 will need to file a formal petition and be approved. Additional charges will be applied to those who are approved to remain in housing during the intersessions and break periods. The application process will available the first week of October 2020.
You can ask to switch rooms or apartments prior to Wednesday, August 19, 2020. However, once the residence halls are open and students move-in, we will not allow room changes. We highly recommend that apartment mates talk to one another and set expectations about how they will manage conflict, apartment chores, and lifestyle (bedtimes, study habits, etc.) soon after move-in. Our Resident Assistants will be available to mediate and facilitate these discussions.
The residence halls will close from Thanksgiving break through the start of the second semester in February. Students will be able to submit a petition to remain in on-campus housing during the first intersession, winter break, and 2nd intercession. The petition process is being developed and will be available the first week of October.
There will be no guests permitted in Campus Housing. Non-housing students, guests, and all other visitors will not be permitted inside any of the residential buildings. Residents may request a reservation for a small space in the Community Building for up to 2 outside-guests at least 48 hours in advance. Approval is dependent upon the number of requests, ability of staff to prepare the room, and other factors at the sole discretion of OHRL. OHRL reserves the right to deny any request.
You do not need to wear a mask while you are inside your apartment. However, you do need to follow the University guidelines, such as those in the Student Commitment Form, related to wearing a mask while outside of the apartment.
Each of the residential buildings has Wi-Fi and you should be able to connect to the network from your room. Each bedroom also has a high speed Ethernet connection. If the Ethernet jack in your room is not active, please contact the UITS Support Center at 574-520-5555 or email@example.com.
