Dear Colleagues,
Thanks to all who attended the recent Coffee with the Chancellor. As always, it is a time to socialize and network, but also to hear campus updates. And, there were a lot of them! Get the latest by checking out the presentation.
Celebrating First-Generation Students
Next week we will be joining colleges and universities across the country to celebrate our first-generation students as part of National First-Generation College Day. At IU South Bend, first-generation college students make up 32% of our total student population. That percentage translates into nearly 1,500 students. These students are the first in their families to go to college, increasing the potential for social mobility for them and their families.
IU South Bend has strengthened its commitment to the success of first-generation students by joining the FirstGen Forward Network. This network works to create transformational change for first-generation students by sharing evidence-based practices and resources that pertain to student success.
Stop by Fireside in the Grill on Thu., Nov. 7 between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm to participate in our FirstGen Celebration.
Election Day Activities
Thanks to the work of our American Democracy Project (ADP), next week will also feature several election activities. On election day, Tue., Nov. 5 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm students, faculty, staff alumni, family, and friends of the university are welcome to join a Parade to the Polls. The parade will leave from the Indiana University South Bend sign on Mishawaka Avenue. Later that evening ADP will host an Election Night Watch Party in the Housing Community Building from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
Then join a Post Election Expression Lunch sponsored by ADP, Student Engagement, and Student Government on Wed., Nov. 6 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in the Administration Building Alumni Room. Come enjoy lunch, gather with others from campus and share your feelings and perspective around the elections.
Upcoming Events
My final Coffee with the Chancellor will be Wed., Dec. 4 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the University Grill. I hope you will join me for my usual campus update, but also an opportunity to formally say farewell to the campus community and celebrate all we have achieved together.
I hope you and a guest will also join us for the Campus Holiday Party on Thu., Dec 12 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the University Grill. This year’s theme is “Dashing Through the Snow” and will feature horse-drawn carriage rides on the campus mall. Let’s hope for some snow by then, just enough to be festive! Look for invitations to the holiday party via email soon.
With Hoosier Spirit and Titan Pride,
