My thanks to all who participated in the installation ceremony last week, from those who put the event together to those who attended. WE had a great turnout! Indiana University President Michael McRobbie, Trustees Donna Spears and Molly Connor, State Representative B. Patrick Bauer, and others came to campus to help us celebrate. It was a special day for me and my family, and especially for the university. I appreciated the good wishes I received from everyone at the university and in the community. My installation speech can be found online here.
As I mentioned in my installation speech, our first-time, full-time freshmen retention rate has set a record of nearly 68%! Improving retention takes teamwork across all units so thanks to all who have worked so hard on improving our re-enrollment numbers. We also had increases in the numbers of Hispanic, veterans, and 21st Century Scholar students who have enrolled with us this year.
Dr. John Welty is back with us today and tomorrow. He is a leadership consultant from the American Association of State Colleges and University’s Penson Center who I have asked to conduct an organizational review of the structure and practices of IU South Bend. He will submit a report with recommendations that I will share with the campus. Students, faculty and staff are invited to an open forum with Dr. Welty today from 4:15–5 p.m. in Room 225 of the Student Activities Center.
I hope to see you at the next Coffee with the Chancellor, which are monthly opportunities for all students, faculty and staff to hear updates on campus priorities, get information on key initiatives, and ask questions. It is also a time when we can celebrate good news and accomplishments, so be prepared to share! The next Coffee with the Chancellor will be held on Tuesday, September 24 at 4 p.m. at the Community Building at River Crossing student housing.
As many of you know, our newest sport is women’s soccer. I cheered them on at their inaugural home game on Saturday and look forward to attending a women’s volleyball game soon as they are on a roll. I look forward to seeing you all around campus and, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter @iusbchancellor. Go Titans!
