September 9, 2022
Dear Colleagues,
I hope the first few weeks of the semester are going well. Thank you for all you have done to help our Titans get off to a great start this year. It was wonderful to see so many of you at our New Student Convocation and Welcome Week festivities. Here are two updates I would like to share with you. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you around campus!
Fall 2022 Enrollment
This fall, Indiana University South Bend enrollment saw an increase in new beginning students, transfer, and graduate students:
- Our beginning freshman increased more than 10% over last year's class.
- Students seeking a graduate degree increased by more than 6%.
- Students who transferred from another institution increased by more than 5%.
Additionally, positive trends continued to ensure the student body reflects the diversity of the community we serve:
- 31% of our campus student body is made up of underrepresented students of color.
- The number of Hispanic/Latino students on campus grew by nearly 11%.
- Nearly 40% of the student body are now first-generation students.
The total number of undergraduate and graduate students at IU South Bend is 4,326, surpassing our target for the year.
IU South Bend, which is ranked sixth among small public colleges for its military friendly campus, saw its number of veteran students increase by nearly 10% this fall. Another important student group, Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars beginning as freshman, saw gains as well, up from last year by 38%. Within the campus’s Honors Program, 79 more students are participating in this enriched and unique college experience, for a total of 374 honors students this year. Additionally, enrollment in online programs increased by nearly 21% over last year.
None of this success would be possible without the leadership of our enrollment management team and the entire campus’s commitment to enrollment and student success. Thank you!
Gear Up Fridays
You may have seen this month that the Indiana University community began a new tradition: “Gear Up Friday” where members of the university community are encouraged to show off their school spirit by sporting IU gear on Fridays. I want you to know that our own tradition of Titan Tuesdays is not going away. You are welcome to participate in both Titan Tuesdays as well as Gear Up Fridays. Let’s keep the Hoosier Spirit and Titan Pride going!
Finally, I look forward to seeing many of you at our next Coffee with the Chancellor on Thursday, October 6 at 3:00pm in the University Grill. Look for more details in the Daily Titan.
